• Departmental Assistantships
• Departmental Fellowships
  • Travel grants. These grants generally support travel to professional meetings at which the student is presenting a paper. Funds may also be available to support travel for conference participation or internships.
  • Study abroad. Grants are available to support graduate student participation in approved MSU study abroad courses.
  • Research enhancement. Small grants are available for travel and other activities that support a student's research.
  • John (Jake) and Maxine Ferris Global Agribusiness Award. Supports overseas study, international travel, and field trips. Contact the Department Associate Chairperson for details.
  • The Glenn and Sandy Johnson Dissertation Enhancement Fellowship is a special fellowship that provides one or more awards each year to students "to permit attainment of especially high levels of excellence" in Ph.D. dissertation research. Contact the Department Associate Chairperson for details.
• Funds from the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources and the Graduate School (see below) are often available to supplement departmental grants for travel or research enhancement. Students typically apply for funds from all three sources (Department, College, Graduate School), using the appropriate form obtained from the Graduate School. Social Science Research Council (SSRC)

The SSRC is an independent, nongovernmental, not-for-profit, international association devoted to the advancement of interdisciplinary research in the social sciences. Grants are available for pre-doctoral studies, doctoral dissertation research, and post-doctoral studies. Many grants are available to non-U.S. citizens as well as U.S. citizens. Assistance in preparing proposals (which must be initiated well in advance of submission deadlines) is available on-campus through a group of faculty convened by CASID and the African Studies Center.
