Computer Facilities and Services

Ag Econ Computer Service

The Ag Econ Computer Service consists of a staff of two computer specialists who provide computer support for the Department of Agricultural, Food, and Resource Economics. Services include:

  • hardware and software installation, maintenance and upgrades for approximately 150 Windows computers owned by the Department
  • consulting on the use of the computers and software for faculty, staff, and graduate students
  • installation and maintenance of network hardware and software for connections to the MSU campus network, the Internet, and the Departmental local-area network
  • operation of the Department web server and design and maintenance of Department web pages
  • development of how-to's, quick reference guides, tutorials, and other training materials
  • support of 20+ computers used for research projects at overseas locations, via assistance in selection of computers, initial setup, consulting, and trouble-shooting

Computers, Software, and Networking in the Department

  • The Department maintains a computer laboratory with 16 computers for use by graduate students. The computers have a variety of software packages, from word processors to statistical and mathematical programs, as well as providing student access to email and the Internet.
  • The Undergraduate Resource Room supplements university computer facilities for undergraduates by providing four computers for network access (email, World-Wide Web).
  • Faculty and staff computers are primarily Pentium 4 machines, running Windows XP. These are connected to the Internet and a Windows local-area network.
  • Standard software used in the Department includes WordPerfect Office, Microsoft Office and Dreamweaver, among others.
