Access to Your Ag Econ Home Folder from Other Computers

When you log on to a computer in room 403, you automatically get access to your home folder on the Ag Econ Windows server. It is also possible for you to access this folder from your own Windows XP Professional or Windows 2000 computer. There are many different ways to do this; we provide a description of one method for Windows XP below.

Unfortunately, Windows networking is a complicated subject and there are many variables that might prevent these instructions from working on your particular computer. The Computer Service cannot provide any assistance other than the instructions below.

Follow these instructions carefully. They are written for Windows XP Professional and may not work exactly as written for other versions of Windows.

1. Run Windows Explorer.
2. Click on "My Network Places".
3. In the right-hand pane, double-click on "Add Network Place". This will open a Wizard dialog.
4. Click Next.
5. Select "Choose another network location", and click Next.
6. Type the full address of your home folder, which is \\aec5.aec.msu.edu\studenthome\yourname  (For example, if your username is sparty23, your folder name would be \\aec5.aec.msu.edu\studenthome\sparty23 ) Click Next.
7. For "User name:" type anr\yourname  (For example, if your username is sparty23, you would type anr\sparty23)  For "Password:", type your usual Ag Econ password, the one you use to log on in room 403. Click OK.
8. When it asks for a name for this network place, click Next.
9. Click Finish.

The new shortcut, named the same as your username, will appear on your computer in My Network Places. Opening it will give you full access to your home folder on the Ag Econ Windows server.

Note that when you open this shortcut in later Windows sessions, you will be asked for your username and password. Always be sure to enter the username as shown above, i.e. anr\yourname
