Storing Files on the Ag Econ Student File Server

Students using room 403 should store their files on the Ag Econ student file server. You can access files on the server from any computer in the room and from the student computer in room 401.

Your home folder on the file server is accessible as the H: drive, and the shared folder is accessible as S:. The rules for using them are:

  • Store all personal files in your private folder, H:.
  • Back up your files to CDs or Zip disks on a regular basis. (Very Important!)
  • Do not install any software.
  • Delete your files when you no longer need them.

A couple of potential problems to be aware of:

  • If there should be a server lockup or a network problem at night or on a weekend, you might lose access to your files until we get back to the office to correct it. This happens very rarely. However, if it does, it could leave you without your files at a time when you were planning to spend the whole weekend working on them to finish by a Monday deadline. It is your responsibility to keep backups so that a failure such as this does not become a catastrophe for you!
  • If the hard drive or some other part of the server should fail, all the files on it could be lost. We do make tape backups of the server on a weekly basis, but you should not rely on those. Again, it is your responsibility to make your own backups.

You may store your own files on the local C: drives in 403, but you do so at your own risk. Files on the local drives could be erased at any time without warning!
