Using Your AFS Space

Your MSU NetID account includes personal file storage space on an MSU server.

Using Windows Explorer

One way to access AFS from other locations is through Windows Explorer, as follows:

  1. Run Windows Explorer.
  2. In the Address: box (just below the toolbar) type ftp://yournetid@afs.msu.edu (For example, if your NetID is sparty23, you would type ftp://sparty23@afs.msu.edu.) Press Enter.
  3. In the User Name: field, type your MSU NetID. In the Password: field, type your MSU NetID password. Then click OK

Windows Explorer will open your AFS space and you can use it as you would any other drive on your computer.

General AFS Information

The folder called web is where you should put any files that you want to make available to the rest of the world as part of your personal web site (http://www.msu.edu/user/yourname). You main web site page should be "index.htm". The folder called public is accessible to other AFS users on a read-only basis. Any files that you want to keep private should be stored in the root of your space or in other folders you create in the root.
