Faculty
Awards Granted by Professional Societies and Other Organizations
- Laura Donnet, David Weatherspoon, and John Hoehn, were awarded 1st Place Award for Best Paper at the 2007 IAMA Symposium, Parma, Italy, for their paper, "What Adds Value in Specialty Coffee? Managerial Implications from Hedonic Price Analysis of Central and South American E-Auctions." (July 20, 2007)
- Carl Eicher was selected by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to serve on a design team for a new initiative called Agricultural Education and Information Sytems. (March, 2007)
- Jake Ferris received the 2007 Certificate of Distinction from the Purdue University Agricultural Alumni Association. In his 40 years at Michigan State Ferris, professor emeritus of agricultural economics, channeled his creative and intellectual energy into research and education programs that enhanced the knowledge and decision-making abilities of his students, extension educators, farmers and agribusiness professionals. He earned his bachelor's degree at Purdue. (March 21, 2007)
- Suzanne Thornsbury received the 2006 Presidential Award for Excellence in Research and Communication from the Food Distribution Research Society at their annual meeting in Quebec City. Her article, "Fresh Grapefruit Supply-Chain Adjustments: Consolidation in Produce Packing?” with co-authors Kathy Davis and Ronald W. Ward, in the November 2005 issue was selected as best among all peer-reviewed articles published in the 2005 Journal of Food Distribution Research. (October 16, 2006)
- Tom Reardon was appointed member of the International Food and Agribusiness Management Review (IFAMR) Editorial Board. IFAMR is the flagship journal of the International Food and Agribusiness Management Association, IAMA, and focuses on international agribusiness and food industry company management issues, global food markets, and the economics of food and agriculture from an agribusiness sub-disciplinary perspective. - Rick Horan and Chris Wolf received the Outstanding American Journal of Agricultural Economics Article (Honorable Mention) Award for their article: Richard Horan and Christopher Wolf. "The Economics of Managing Infectious Wildlife Disease." American Journal of Agricultural Economics, 87(3):(August 2005):537-551. (August 4, 2006)
- Frank Lupi and John Hoehn were part of a team that received the Outstanding Poster Presentation (3rd place) Award for their poster: "Using an Attribute Based Referendum to Value Great Lakes Wetlands Conservation and Restoration Programs." Oscar Arreola, Frank Lupi, Michael Kaplowitz and John Hoehn. (August 4, 2006)
- Tom Reardon was appointed Associate Editor of Agricultural Economics (the IAAE journal), effective January 2007 as well as a member of the International Advisory Board of the Development Policy Review. (August 4, 2006)

- Larry Hamm was awarded the 2007 Excellence in Teaching Award.
- Robert Myers was awarded the 2007 Excellence in Research Award - Publication of Enduring Quality.
Graduate
Students
- Nigel Griswold received the National Center for Smart Growth 2006 best MS thesis award for his work, entitled "The Impacts of Tax Foreclosed Properties and Fund Bank Programs on Residential Property Values in Flint, Michigan."
- Denys Nizalov was awarded honorable mention for best dissertation in 2006 by Regional Science Association International.
- Eric Burham Bailey has won the Homer Higbee International Education award. Bailey is the founder and was the first president of the Caribbean Students Association, and he currently serves as the president of the University’s International Students Association. (April 4, 2007)
- Cristobal A. Aguilar - Departmental Best MS Thesis Award for 2006. "Trade Analysis of Specific Agri-Food Commodities Using a Gravity Model". Major Professor: Suzanne Thornsbury.
- Lesiba Elias Bopape - Departmental Best PhD. Thesis Award for 2006. "The Influence of Demand Model Selection on Household Welfare Estimates: An Application to South African Food Expenditures". Major Professor: Robert Myers.
- Rui Benfica, now the chief poverty economist for the World Bank in Maputo, Mozambique, was recognized during the MSU 2007 International Awards Ceremony on March 21. He received the Gill-Chin Award for Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation in Global Studies for his dissertation analyzing the income poverty effects in cash cropping economics in Mozambique. Dr. David Tschirley, professor of international development in the Department of Agricultural Economics, was his major professor.
