CONGRATULATIONS DR. THORNSBURY

Dr. Suzanne Thornsbury will receive the Presidential Award for Excellence in Research and Communication from the Food Distribution Research Society at the annual meeting next week in Quebec City.  Her article, "Fresh Grapefruit Supply-Chain Adjustments: Consolidation in Produce Packing?” with co-authors Kathy Davis and Ronald W. Ward, in the November 2005 issue was selected as best among all peer-reviewed articles published in the 2005 Journal of Food Distribution Research.  Please join me in congratulating Suzanne on her award! ---Kellie Raper

2006 BALLOT ISSUES BULLETIN

The MSU bulletin describing the five statewide ballot proposals is now accessible at www.msue.msu.edu/slg/.  It also will be linked from the MSUE portal--the MSU Extension Spotlight-- placing it on the front page of all county sites.  The eight-page publication is posted as a PDF file; we will not be sending printed copies to county offices.

For more than 25 years MSU Extension has been publishing ballot issue bulletins, providing objective information on complex policy issues.  The bulletin contains the official wording, background information, a description of what the proposal would change and a brief discussion of the policy issues.  Share this publication widely with all groups and individuals.  A PowerPoint presentation with speaker's notes & a set of suggestions for using the ballot issue information is available on the Strategic Connections website (www.msue.msu.edu/portal/)  under "Information for an election year."  Contact Beth Moore for any questions:  mooreeee@msu.msu.edu or 517-353-9694.

Daily Coach Service

E. Lansing/Lansing/Jackson/Detroit Metro Michigan Flyer will begin daily coach service between East Lansing, Lansing, Jackson, and Detroit Metro Airport on November 16, 2006.  Our University Travel Manager, Debbie Gulliver, rode the motor coach last week.  She says it's nice and comfortable with plenty of leg room.  In addition, the buses are brand new (three in total).  They have electrical outlets, wireless internet, and hope to have a printer on board so passengers can print their boarding passes.  Drop off/pick up for the East Lansing area will be at the East Lansing Marriott.  METROPOLITAN COUNCIL, St. Paul, MN, are seeking for:

Research Analyst (Principal Forecaster) - Requisition No:  290779.  Provides expertise & project leadership for demographic forecasting, socio-economic modeling, development and re-development monitoring, and land supply analysis; consultation to clients in the application of research to regional growth strategy and planning; Possesses principal responsibility for the Council's regional forecasts, including scoping & implementation of a new disaggregate micro-simulation model (e.g., UrbanSim) for demographic and land use forecasts.  Leads the demographic and geographic forecast modeling of major revisions (2-3 times per decade) of Council's forecasts, working with team to assess, analyze and organize data inputs needed by the forecast model.  Participates as forecast expert in regional system plan development (transportation and water resources) and local comprehensive plan review and coordinates minor/interim forecast revisions.  Required:  Master's degree in demography, geography, applied economics, statistics, a related social science, or urban planning; minimum five (5)  years of professional experience in research, analysis, government statistics, and/or data management includes 2 years of experience.  Deadline:  Nov. 10, 2006

 Researcher - Requisition No:  290778.  Assesses and analyzes data sources, researches product dev. and engages in project execution within the areas of survey research, housing market analysis, demography and Census data analysis.  Analyzes the American Community Survey and other Census products, provides technical assistance to users of these products and cooperates with partner agencies through the Census State Data Center (SDC) Network.
