WELCOME DR. NATAWIDJAJA

The Department welcomes Dr. Ronnie S. Natawidjaja (pronounced nahtahweejieyah), a visiting scholar in our Department September-November 2006.  He is Director, Center for Agricultural Policy and Agribusiness Studies at Padjadjaran University, in Bandung (West Java) in Indonesia.  He is working with Tom Reardon on supermarkets, wholesalers, and horticultural producers in Indonesia.  Dr. Natawidjaja is located in Room 219-8 Ag Hall and can be contacted by e-mail at ronnien@telkom.net or by phone at 353-9172.

CONGRATULATIONS FOR BEST PAPER

Congratulations to Eli Fenichel who won the "best paper" competition at the Heartland Environmental and Resource Economics Workshop for his paper and presentation entitled "Split-Sample Tests of "Don't Know" and "Indifferent" Responses in an Attribute-Based Choice Model" by Eli Fenichel, Frank Lupi, John Hoehn, and Michael Kaplowitz.  The award carried a $500 prize.  See http://www.card.iastate.edu/here/ --Frank Lupi

CONDOLENCES

The Department extends condolences to Darrell and Ruth Fienup and their family.  We have received word that their son, Scott (age 47 years), died as a result of an auto accident yesterday (26TH) in Hawaii.  Ruth and her daughter are on their way to Hawaii today (27TH) and there is no other information available at this time.  Darrell is an Ag Econ Professor Emeritus.

HOUSE AG SUBCOMMITTEE HEARS FROM AG ECONOMISTS

Thinking of enrolling in the ESP Study Tour to Mexico? If you are a provost appointed extension employee you are eligible to apply for professional development funds as well as special "International Extension Training Program, IETP" travel grants. Just contact our new International Extension Programs Director, Michelle (Shelly) Owens:<owens@msu.edu> to request a travel grant anytime you are traveling internationally. Explain your situation and note how you plan to use the insights gained to internationalize your work in Extension. The due date for enrollments in the Mexico Study Tour is coming up soon. CARILLON RECITAL SERIES

The Carillon Series for the month of October is at the Beaumont Tower, on Sundays at 2 p.m. in the West Circle Drive oval area.  Bring a blanket or chairs, and perhaps a picnic, and enjoy the beautiful music of the bells.

TSA EASES RULES

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has eased some of the rules regarding the ability to carry liquids and gels in carry on baggage.  For example, travelers are now permitted to bring drinks, liquids, and gels purchased in airport stores inside the security checkpoints onto an airplane.  Please visit www.tsa.gov for a complete information about permissible carry on items and air travel security.

HOMECOMING PARADE

Grand River Avenue will come alive as the 2006 Homecoming celebration begins with the annual Homecoming Parade, Friday, Sept. 29, at 6 p.m.  The parade will travel from the intersection of Abbott and Burcham streets in East Lansing, south on Abbott Road, east on Grand River Avenue and south on Bogue Street before reaching the IM East.

ADELAJA, LYLES, & NAJAFI NAMED TO BOARD

Soji Adelaja, John A Hannah Distinguished Professor in Land Policy and Director, Land Policy Institute; Richard Lyles, Professor and Associate Chair, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, and Co-Director of the Michigan Transit Center for Excellence; and Mohammad Najafi, Assistant Professor and Director, Center for Underground Infrastructure Research and Education, are among three newly named members of the editorial board of the Journal of Urban Planning and Development.  The Journal covers issues related to urban planning, land use, transportation, public works and utilities, and urban development.

2006 BALLOT ISSUES BULLETIN

The MSU bulletin describing the five statewide ballot proposals is now accessible at www.msue.msu.edu/slg/.  It also will be linked from the MSUE portal--the MSU Extension Spotlight-- placing it on the front page of all county sites.  The eight-page publication is posted as a PDF file; we will not be sending printed copies to county offices.

For more than 25 years MSU Extension has been publishing ballot issue bulletins, providing objective information on complex policy issues.  The bulletin contains the official wording, background information, a description of what the proposal would change and a brief discussion of the policy issues.  Share this publication widely with all groups and individuals.  A PowerPoint presentation with speaker's notes & a set of suggestions for using the ballot issue information is available on the Strategic Connections website (www.msue.msu.edu/portal/)  under "Information for an election year."  Contact Beth Moore for any questions:  mooreeee@msu.msu.edu or 517-353-9694.
