NEW APPOINTMENT
Tom Reardon has been appointed Associate Editor of Agricultural Economics (the IAAE journal), effective January 2007 and Tom also has been appointed member of the International Advisory Board of the Development Policy Review.
AAEA AWARDS
The Department was honored by some of our faculty who received awards at the AAEA annual meetings in Long Beach, CA.
Rick Horan and Chris Wolf received the Outstanding American Journal of Agricultural Economics Article (Honorable Mention) Award for their article: Richard Horan and Christopher Wolf. "The Economics of Managing Infectious Wildlife Disease." American Journal of Agricultural Economics, 87(3):(August 2005):537-551.
Frank Lupi and John Hoehn were part of a team that received the Outstanding Poster Presentation (3rd place) Award for their poster: "Using an Attribute Based Referendum to Value Great Lakes Wetlands Conservation and Restoration Programs." Oscar Arreola, Frank Lupi, Michael Kaplowitz and John Hoehn.

Next spring 2007 the Department of Applied Economics at the University of Minnesota will host the 4th Minnesota International Economic Development Conference on Friday, May 4 and Saturday, May 5, 2007. Guest speaker will be Christopher Udry, Professor of Economics and Director of the Economic Growth Center at Yale University.
We invite you, and any other interested faculty in your department, to submit a paper to present at the conference. Papers on any topic related to international economic development are welcome. Deadline for submission is December 31, 2006. You will be notified by January 31, 2007 whether your paper has been accepted. FORD FOUNDATION DIVERSITY FELLOWSHIPS

Description: Through its program of Diversity Fellowships, the Ford Foundation seeks to increase the diversity of the nation's college and university faculties by increasing their ethnic and racial diversity, maximize the educational benefits of diversity, and increase the number of professors who can and will use diversity as a resource for enriching the education of all students. The postdoctoral fellowships provide one year of support for individuals engaged in postdoctoral study after attaining the Ph.D. or Sc.D. degree. Postdoctoral fellowships will be awarded in a national competition administered by the National Research Council (NRC) of the National Academies on behalf of the Ford Foundation. The awards will be made to individuals who, in the judgment of the review panels, have demonstrated superior academic achievement, are committed to a career in teaching and research at the college or university level, show promise of future achievement as scholars and teachers, and are well prepared to use diversity as a resource for enriching the education of all students. CONSERVATION GUEST SCHOLAR GRANTS

NATURE AND HUMAN SYMBIOSIS PROJECT

CERCLA SUPERFUND - NATIONAL BROWNFIELDS JOB TRAINING GRANTS

Description: This notice announces the availability of funds and solicits applications from eligible entities and non-profit organizations to provide environmental job training projects that will facilitate the assessment, remediation, or preparation of brownfield sites. Applicants must propose to serve a community that currently receives, or has received, financial assistance from EPA for brownfields assessment, revolving loan fund, or cleanup competitive grants. States and certain eligible Indian Tribes currently receiving CERCLA Section 128 funding may propose to serve any community within their jurisdiction where the state or Indian Tribe is conducting site-specific brownfields work (e.g., assessment or clean up activities) with state, Indian Tribal or Federal CERCLA Section 128 funds.

TWO NEW CITIZEN PLANNER MODULES
The Citizen Planner program announces the launch of two new modules in its Online Training Program. Module 2, Legal Foundations, covers the basic legal framework, governmental authority, and constitutional limitations for planning and zoning in Michigan. Module 3, The Comprehensive Plan, walks the learner through creating a comprehensive master plan, understanding future land use classifications, and reviewing and revising existing comprehensive plans.
The new courses join Modules 1 and 6, already available online at: www.citizenplanner.msu.edu/online/. All seven modules will be available this fall. Each training course costs just $69.99, providing an inexpensive and convenient way for non-professional planners to gain the knowledge they need to lead their communities in effective land use planning. CAMPUS PORTAL TRAINING
The upcoming Campus Portal Training will be held once a month from August through November. These are half day sessions. You can sign up for as many of the classes as you need, as many times as you need.
User Training - is for those who work for MSU Extension, will be using the portal to share information with other staff, or accessing materials from units such as Professional Development, etc. How to manage your profile, your My Portal, Workspaces and Live Session, some on Calendar.
Manager Training - is for those who will be actively managing staff changes, and portal pages. How to create and manage portal pages, modules, upload files to and from workspaces, using the calendar. How to add and remove staff from your portal.

OPERATION: MILITARY KIDS…
TO: MSU Extension Staff and Community Partners:
Operation: Military Kids Ready, Set, Go! Ready, Set, Go! is a one day educational session designed for professionals, key volunteers, and community partners. An upcoming Ready, Set, Go! Workshop will be on Tuesday, August 22 at the Grayling Township Hall, Grayling. Registration will begin at 9 a.m. and the workshop will conclude at 3 p.m.
This workshop addresses issues children, youth, and families face when a family member becomes suddenly military. Workshop participants will explore what it means to National Guard, Army Reserve and other military families to become suddenly military. This workshop is designed for you to gain a stronger understanding of the impact of the deployment cycle on soldiers, families, youth and the community. Other topics which are addressed include: Military Culture, Stress & Coping, Grief, Loss, & Trauma, Fostering Resiliency, and Media Influence, and Building Community Capacity.
MSUE is partnering with Mich. National Guard; Mich. Army Reserve; Mich. Dept. of Education; American Legion; Boys & Girls Clubs and the Military Child Education Coalition.
