The Department welcomes Dr. Cheick Oumar Diarrah, from Mali, who will be spending the year at MSU as a Visiting Scholar. Cheick is currently on leave from the United Nations Office of West Africa; from 1995 through 2002, he served as Mali’s ambassador to the US. While at MSU, he will be completing two books, helping teach a course on policy making and diplomacy in Africa, and brainstorming with various people at MSU about how to strengthen the University’s programs in Africa.

The Department welcomes Perrine Burnod, a Phd student from Montpellier, France. Perrine is doing her Phd in the Dept. of Ag. Econ. of the INRA (French Institute for Agronomy Research) and also in the Dept. of Social Sciences of the CIRAD (French Agricultural Research Centre for International Development). Her research director is Jean-Philippe Colin (IRD, Research Institute for Development).
Perrine's study is about agrarian contracts in Mayotte Island (a French island located in the Indian Ocean). It deals more precisely in this context with the relations among institutional environment and agrarian practices.
During her visit with us fall semester, Perrine is taking A. Schmid's AEC 810 class and is working on her thesis. She has a worksite in Room 219-3 Agriculture Hall; her office phone is 353-9848 and her e-mail is burnodpe@msu.edu.

FOND FAREWELL
Karen Reynolds has accepted a position as Assistant Director in the College of Natural Science Student Affairs Office. We are sorry to see Karen leave the department, but congratulate her on this promotion. In addition to various accomplishments, Karen has been instrumental in designing and implementing the highly successful STEP program to assist students in academic difficulty. We wish Karen all the best in her new position.
CONDOLENCES
Marion "Pauline" Carr, longtime administrative assistant in the CANR Dean's office, passed away on Sept. 9, 2005. A graveside service was held on Sept. 15, 2005 at 10 am at Deepdale Memorial Gardens. Over Pauline's 42 year MSU career, she served six CANR Deans - Anthony, Hardin, Cowden, Boger, Hoefer, and Anderson. She retired in 1987. Memorial contributions may be made to Westminister Presbyterian Church in memory of Marion Pauline Carr.
NEW DIRECTOR OF THE MICH. AG EXPERIMENT STATION
Dr. Steve Pueppke, Associate Dean for Research, College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences (ACES) at the University of Illinois, has accepted to become the new Director of the Michigan Agricultural Experiment Station and Assistant Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies. Dr. Pueppke's appointment, which is subject to MSU Board of Trustees' approval, will begin January 1, 2006.
Dr Pueppke was born in Fargo, North Dakota, and was raised on a small grain farm in the Red River Valley. He earned his B.S. in Horticulture from MSU and his doctorate in Plant Pathology from Cornell University. I also want to warmly commend Dr. Steve Hanson and the search committee for their commitment to this important process

FALL 2005 STUDY ABROAD FAIR
The Fall 2005 Study Abroad Fair has been scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 22. The event will be held on the second floor of the MSU Union, 12 noon - 6 pm. It will mark the 17th anniversary of this semi-annual event.
The fair is designed to give students a one-stop opportunity to learn about the wide array of MSU programs, and to meet & speak with faculty knowledgeable about these programs. Students visiting the fair can speak with representatives from the Office of Financial Aid, the MSU Travel Clinic, and other support units across campus. Academic advisers from each college and staff from the Office of Study Abroad will also be present.

IFPRI (The International Food Policy Research Institute) is seeking for a Research Fellow / SR. Research Fellow -Leader of IFPRIs Country Strategy Program, Kampala, Uganda, (Position # 05-143 (N)); a two-year, fixed-term, renewable appointment. The Fellow will be responsible for conducting research, policy advice, and capacity strengthening and policy communications in Uganda and leading IFPRIs country strategy. The Fellow will allocate about 50% to program management and 50% to research and capacity-building activities related to the country program. The Fellow will be responsible for timely completion of research projects, actively publish papers/books, and participate in various conferences, policy advisory forums, and capacity strengthening training programs. This position reports to the director of the Development Strategy and Governance Division and is based in Kampala, Uganda. Required: Ph D in Economics, Agri.
