HONORS AT THE AAEA MEETINGS
The Department continues to be honored by two of our faculty who received awards at the 2005 AAEA meetings.  Dr. Soji Adelaja and Dr. Dave Weatherspoon each received “Outstanding Black Agricultural Economists Awards” in recognition of their professional achievement and contributions to the agricultural economics profession. The awards were presented at the CWAE and COSBAE Luncheon.  Please join me in congratulating each of them for this important recognition of their accomplishments.--Steve Hanson
 
THREE ADDITIONAL DEPT HONORS.
Sandra Batie was notified that she will be the recipient of the Soil and Water Conservation Society President's Leadership Award for her dedication and service to the Society and her participation on expert panels in the areas of science and policy.

At the AAEA annual meetings, James Hilker received the Extension Outlook Premier Forecaster Award in recognition of superior forecasting of Livestock Production and Prices for the period 2004 to 2005.
 
Nancy Creed was recently elected to the CANR Staff Advisory Committee.  We know Nancy's presence on this College-wide Committee will be appreciated by the group.  The purpose of the CANR Staff Advisory Committee is to provide a direct communication link to the Dean regarding issues and opportunities of importance to CANR staff members. The CANR Staff Advisory Committee is a parallel group to the CANR Faculty Advisory Group.

Each candidate will provide a presentation followed by an open forum at 105 South Kedzie, 2:30 - 4:00 p.m. After each forum, stakeholders will have an opportunity to meet with the respective candidate. The MSU community and stakeholders are also invited to a reception for each finalist in the Agriculture Hall Atrium, 4:45 - 5:45 p.m.

NEW MSUE ACTING STATE PROGRAM LEADER
MSU Extension Director is pleased to announce that effective July 1  Larry Olsen,  MSU professor of entomology and coordinator of the Professional Masters Degree Program in Integrated Pest Management (IPM),  joined MSU Extension (MSUE) as acting state program leader for agricultural programs. Dr. Olsen will provide oversight and coordination for MSUE's Ag. Program, foster ongoing dialogue with Michigan commodity groups, and work with MSUE's Agriculture Area of Expertise teams to develop programming to enhance the profitability of Michigan's agriculture and respond to new and emerging trends.

Dr. Olsen will serve as acting state program leader for the next six to nine months. MSUE will begin a national search for an associate director of programs and state program leader for agriculture later this summer.

MSUs 150th ANNIVERSARY ACTIVITIES
Oct. 7
-  Water Carnival on the Red Cedar River, 5:30 to 7:30 pm followed by a spectacular fireworks display.
 
Oct. 8 -  MSU Sesquicentennial Parade, 12 noon at the Frandor Shopping Center.  This 2.5 mile parade will travel down Michigan Ave., East Grand River Ave. and through the MSU campus ending at the Sparty Statue near Spartan Stadium.  Past MSU Presidents and their families have been invited to serve as Grand Marshals for this event.  Following the parade the newly bronzed Sparty Statue will be dedicated.

JAZZ FEST
The eleventh JazzFest is a 2-day (Fri. & Sat., Aug. 5 & 6) music festival that brings over 20 local, regional, and national acts to an audience of over 20,000 people from across Michigan and the Tri-State area.  Ethnic food and beverages, art, clothing and crafts are available from vendors who line the sidewalks, and art galleries open their doors during festival hours in historic Old Town Lansing at the corner of Turner & E. IWMI
